L'exceptionnelle biodiversité des Galapagos s'explique par la présence de trois grands courants marins : les masses d'eau froide apportées du sud par le courant de Humboldt, le courant de Cromwell amenant des eaux profondes et fraîches en provenance de l'ouest, et les masses d'eau chaude venant du Panama par le nord-est. Ces îles océaniques constituent un microcosme unique sur la planète. Animaux et plantes se sont développés en vase clos.
