La légende dit que les mains des ouvriers furent tranchées à la fin du travail, pour qu'ils ne puissent plus reconstruire une copie ailleurs... mais qu'ils touchèrent en compensation une somme d'argent suffisante pour vivre jusqu'à la fin de leurs jours ; afin d'éviter de subir le même sort, l'architecte avait intégré un défaut dans la construction du dôme qu'il était le seul à connaître, gardant ainsi la possibilité de le corriger ; une fois l'édifice terminé, Shah Jahan projeta de construire, sur l'autre rive, une réplique identique, en marbre noir, mais son fils Aurangzeb l'enferma car les finances ne permettaient plus une telle dépense.
