Animal rare à la fourrure blanche et aux yeux bleus qui fait le succès des zoos et des cirques. Le tigre blanc ne procéde pas d'une sous espèce de tigre, c'est un tigre de Bengale à part entière qui peut se croiser avec les tigres roux du Bengale. Son ancêtre est un tigre blanc du Bengale appelé "Mohan". Pour obtenir des tigres blancs, on a croisé les péres avec leurs filles et les soeurs avec leurs oncles... Cette consanguinité élevée conduit à des anomalies physiques et mentales et on estime aujourd'hui qu'un tigre blanc sur 30 est en bonne santé !!! tigre,blanc.

Ce magnifique félin, à l'élégante robe rousse zébrée, se rencontre principalement en Inde. Cette espèce est très menacée. La population actuelle serait estimée à environ 3000 individus contre 20 000 au milieu du siècle dernier. tigre,bengale.

Le Tigre est un animal solitaire, chassant à l'affût la nuit ou le jour. Il attaque ses proies sur le côté ou par l'arrière, les tue d'une morsure à la nuque ou à la gorge et les étouffe. Carnivore, il se nourrit de Cerf axis, Cerf sambar, Nilgaut, Singe, Sanglier, Gaur... tigre,bengale,inde.

Les tigres sont souvent solitaires. Leur vie sociale repose pourtant sur un groupe. Le mâle dominant exerce son pouvoir sur quelques femelles et sur un territoire. Il apporte sécurité et sérénité à son clan. Les jeunes quittent la famille vers l'âge de 3 ans, quand le dominant les considère comme rivaux. Lorsqu'un mâle revendique un territoire, il lui arrive de s'attaquer aux petits pour conquérir les femelles... tigre,bengale,inde.

Le tigre du bengale atteint la maturité sexuelle à 3 ans pour les femelles et à 4 ans pour les mâles. La reproduction se déroule généralement au printemps. La femelle n'est fertile que 3 à 7 jours. Elle met au monde 2 à 4 petits au terme d'une grossesse de 95 à 112 jours. Les jeunes restent avec leur mère 2 à 3 ans avant de prendre leur autonomie.l tigre,bengale,inde.

Au siècle dernier, la population de tigres en Inde était estimée à environ 40 000 individus. Ce chiffre est tombé aujourd'hui à 4000 ! Considéré comme "mangeur d'hommes" cet animal a longtemps été chassé. Espèce protégée depuis 1970, il est encore hélas toujours braconné pour ses prétendues vertus médicales... tigre,bengale,inde.
