Les marais de Bangweulu sont une vaste zone aquatique alimentée par 17 rivières et environ 1400mm d'eau par an. La superficie de cette zone est d'environ 15000km2. Les papyrus occupent le marais sur d'immenses zones qui sert de refuge aux oiseaux .

Cet échassier aux allures préhistoriques dûes à son énorme bec en forme de sabot est une espèce rare , présente principalement en Zambie ( marais de Bangweulu) , Ouganda(lac Victoria) ainsi qu'en petit nobre au Soudan et en Tanzanie. Inféodé à un milieu marécageux , peu farouche envers l'homme , il demeure difficile à trouver , notre quête a duré trois jours pour enfin en approcher un dans de superbes conditions ..
